Creating a luxury spa bathroom in your home can seem like a daunting task. With proper planning, you can create a spa-like bathroom and enjoy a serene place to relax, unwind, and spend some precious time pampering yourself.

If you’ve enjoyed the ambiance of a professional spa environment, you will know that certain details make the experience a luxury.

A spa is quiet, softly lit, and imbued with natural elements like stone, wood, soft neutral colors, warm floors and towels, and fragrances like Rosemary, cedar, sandalwood or jasmine.

Whether you have the budget for a full bathroom renovation or just want to make the space you have more luxuriously spa-like on a budget these ideas will inspire you.

Consider these luxury upgrades!

A spacious shower:

Modern shower areas are roomy and transparent. Made of frameless glass the enclosures give your spa an open feeling. Consider a steam shower with an aromatherapy pump, mood lighting, and a waterproof MP3 dock. And a comfortable seat to relax in.

The bath:

The ubiquitous whirlpool bath was a popular addition to modern bathrooms, and though it still has its place, there are new, exciting designs and technologies. Deep soaking baths are both striking statement pieces and comfortable spots for soothing away your stress.  Freestanding, at least 16 inches deep, with a temperature controlled heated surface and an optional bubble-massage, these beautiful baths come in many shapes and sizes and are a “must” for the home spa.

The spa bathroom sink:

One of the newest looks for bathrooms is the vessel sink which appears to be a free-standing bowl on the bathroom counter but is attached and has a drain installed. Choose from a variety of shapes made of porcelain, crystal, marble, glass, or slate and from colors like aqua, amber, green, and stone.

Warm floors, natural materials:

A bathroom renovation is the best opportunity to install radiant heat beneath your floors. Not only will you have a delightfully warm bathroom (and warm feet) but you can also choose the perfect spa look in natural flooring at the same time.

Cork flooring is made from the renewable bark of the cork tree, is naturally water-resistant and resists mildew. A warm organic brown, cork is resilient, providing a soft surface underfoot. Cork needs a sealer to make it water-tight.

A second option is a natural stone. Reminiscent of mineral springs, stone lends an organic warmth and texture to your spa bathroom. Stone tiles will help in achieving the luxurious look you want. Slate tile is also a perfect option for bathroom flooring because it is naturally slip-resistant. Slate is available in a wide variety of colors including watery blues and greys.

Low background lighting is essential and creates a restful, serene feeling. Softly directed spotlights, under-cabinet lighting and concealed lights that operate on dimmer switches are best. You will need some brighter illumination in makeup and shaving areas, but when it’s spa time, turn those lights down low.

A fireplace and a chair:

A simple gas fireplace (if there’s room of course) will make your spa experience sublime, especially if you live in a climate with chilly winters. A chair is essential too, for both relaxing and dressing. Whether you choose a simple bench or plush seating, you’ll find many uses for a chair in your spa bathroom.

The window:

If you have a large window, make the most of it! Put your bath beneath the window and if you have privacy and a view, let the light shine through. Window treatments, if needed, should enhance the spa ambiance – light, airy muslin or lace curtains, or folding wood or bamboo shutters will work for small or large windows.

Unique hardware:

If you’re looking for luxury in bathroom faucets, your choices are unlimited. Brass, bronze, antiqued metal, and more contemporary brushed or satin stainless steel materials are materials used in a spectacular array of designs.

Your choice of sink, shower, and bath will inform the faucet design you choose. If you haven’t shopped for home hardware in a while, be prepared for some surprises and hard choices! For the most authentic spa look, however, consider simple lines.

The rainfall shower head:

Rainfall showerheads come in many sizes, but they all offer the delicious sensation of bathing in the falling rain. Just warmer! They are an excellent addition to your home spa – and the bigger the showerhead, the better.

Ample storage:

There is no place for clutter in a spa environment. In keeping with the clean, relaxing mood of your beautiful bathroom spa, install enough cupboards to hold your everyday necessities. Display only your most beautiful accessories on the countertops and shelves.

A neutral shade of walls and doors:

Paint the walls with organic, natural, earth colors like stone, soft celadon green, sand or watery blues. Neutral shades are the most conducive to relaxation.

  • Big fluffy towels and a warm bathrobe are essential. If you install a warming rack or drawer, those towels will feel even better.
  • Wood bath caddy for your book, your bath salts, and a glass of bubbly or lemon water.
  • A rack or hooks to hang your towels to dry.
  • Spa slippers.
  • Display candles in soft shades and different heights.
  • A leafy plant or two, a beautiful orchid, or tall green bamboo shoots in a glass vase.
  • Decant necessary bathing items (shampoo, conditioner, bath salts and body lotions) into attractive bottles and containers.
  • Use aromatherapy such as natural essence of Rosemary, sandalwood, jasmine, vanilla or cedar in a diffuser.
  • A wooden tray with a base of stones to display artisan soaps or to hold candles.
  • You will need a mirror. Mirrors reflect light and give bathrooms a sense of space. Your choice of mirrors will depend on the décor, your wall space, and your personal preferences.

It’s time to enjoy your luxury bathroom spa transformation! Fill the bath, light some candles, dim the lights, and put on some music.  Now relax and leave the stresses of the day behind.
