There are few things in this world more delightful than gathering family and friends around the table to enjoy a meal.

Wellness and healthy, active living are the cornerstones of Celadon’s traditional community. Green parklands, trails, sunshine, and ocean breezes invite outdoor activities beneath the stately live oak trees, immersed in magnolia and jasmine’s fragrance.

Staying healthy also includes eating food that is good for you. Studies show that nutrition, along with active living, can lower your risk of heart disease, stroke, and some cancers and help you have a healthy body weight.

Thanks to South Carolina’s fertile coastal farmlands and bountiful ocean harvests, Celadon’s residents enjoy a plentiful supply of healthful, homegrown produce and freshly caught seafood.

Farmer’s markets in Beaufort sell locally grown fruits and vegetables and shrimp, oysters, crabs, and finned fish, which are perfect for cooking up your favorite recipes at home.

You’ll also find farm-fresh pork, chicken, and beef for your summer barbeques.

Beaufort’s bakeries sell fresh-baked bread and other treats, but many families enjoy making cobblers, biscuits, pies, and squares at home.

Lowcountry cooking is one of the mainstays of southern culture, and many beloved recipes are so delicious that families have passed them along for hundreds of years. Traditional southern dishes like root vegetables creamed or mashed with butter and brown sugar, collards cooked in bacon fat, pan-fried chicken, mac and cheese casseroles, sweet and spicy barbeque, grilled cheese, or pimiento sandwiches, shoo-fly pie – there are so many, and they are all wonderful.

But they are not always the healthiest choices for everyday eating.

Health-conscious southern cooks have recently modified some of the oldies-but-goodies by reducing the amount of fat and sugar in recipes. They’ve replaced traditional ingredients like white flour with whole grains, and incorporated cooking methods that use less (or no) fat, while still producing mouth-watering results.

Modern kitchens now include slow cookers, instant pots, and air-fryers – appliances that enhance the nutritional value and flavor of everyday meals. Air-fryers eliminate the need for oil but still deliver a crispy piece of chicken or plate of fries. Oven-roasting techniques can also produce a “deep-fried” texture without using oil or fat.

Try a few of these health-conscious recipes and decide for yourself.

Sweet or savory but always sumptuous, these easy, healthy summer dishes celebrate the best local and seasonal Lowcountry produce. They use basic ingredients that you probably already have in your pantry – everything you need to prepare the lighter version of a traditional Lowcountry family feast.

Juicy Faux Fried Chicken From SkinnyMs. It’s a southern classic. With that juicy, savory goodness, it’s the much-craved entreé called deep-fried chicken. The only problem is that most fried chicken recipes are loaded with unhealthy fats. Not this one. Our Juicy Faux Fried Chicken is better than most fried chicken recipes because it isn’t fried at all, but you’d never guess that from its taste. This recipe is sure to be a classic at your house. Enjoy!

Cornbread Crab Cakes. This recipe from Southern Living Magazine invites you to: Enjoy a guilt-free serving of these hearty crab cakes with a rich dollop of cilantro-jalapeño sour cream. Add fresh greens to your plate for extra goodness.

Key “Light” Pie!  Another treat from Southern Living: If you love Key Lime Pie, try this recipe. Why it’s better for you: You’ll hear angels sing (Jimmy Buffet tunes) when you taste how rich this version is without all the fat!

Light Fresh Peach Cobbler from Food.com uses low-calorie margarine, non-fat milk, and relies on the sweetness of fresh ripe peaches, adding only six tablespoons of sugar.

Fresh green salads, oven-baked fried green tomatoes, steamed green beans, and tangy coleslaw made with low-fat mayo make great side dishes. Fresh ripe peaches and juicy watermelon slices are perfectly healthy and low-calorie desserts.

Enjoy!
